Minstrel’s Alley Novelist, Gordon Basichis, is Selected for Levure Litteraire

Minstrel’s Alley author, Gordon Basichis, has been selected for inclusion in the 13th Edition of Levure Litteraire, a prestigious literary publication featuring poets, authors, and artists from around the world. The latest edition of the online publication includes Chapter Eleven of Basichis’ novel, The Blood Orange.

Minstrel’s Alley Sees Sales Double on Gordon Basichis’ Biographical Novel, Beautiful Bad Girl, The Vicki Morgan Story

Minstrel’s Alley, has seen recent sales double on its bestselling, Beautiful Bad Girl, the Vicki Morgan Story. The non-fiction book describes in first person the scandalous self-destructive relationship between department store scion and Ronald Reagan Kitchen Cabinet Member, Alfred Bloomingdale, and Vicki Morgan, his mistress of some thirteen years. The book is told through author, Gordon Basichis’ point of view, as he knew Morgan and got swept up in her murder trial, serving as a witness for the prosecution.

“Beautiful Bad Girl was absolutely scandalous when it was first published back in the eighties, by Santa Barbara Press,” said Minstrel’s Alley Publisher, M.J. Hammond. “People were much more morally constrained and less accepting of the wild bad girl and her years as Bloomindale’s mistress. It is an amazing story, a wild ride depicting how a high school dropout off the streets of suburban Los Angeles found notoriety and fortune hobnobbing with some of the richest and most powerful people in the world. Vicki Morgan, of course, came to her tragic end.”

Hammond noted that the increase in book sales is a result of a brisker marketing campaign and that the author, Gordon Basichis, has been interviewed for an upcoming documentary film about the luminaries of the eighties and the social mores of the time. She added that Basichis has been interviewed before on a number of occasions, including the Vicki Morgan segment on Investigation Discovery.

“The sex scandal made international headlines,” said Hammond. “Several books, seemingly countless feature articles, and different television segments have been made about this incredible story. But the book’s author,Gordon Basichis, was the only one who knew Morgan. She had chosen him to write her book.

Minstrel’s Alley Launches Marketing Campaign for Gordon Basichis’ New Novel, The Cuban Quartet

Minstrel’s Alley, an independent publishing and media group, has launched a comprehensive marketing campaign for its latest novel, “The Cuban Quartet,” by Gordon Basichis. The new book is romantic mystery thriller based in the mythical skullduggery of the old American Gangsters and the CIA just before Castro marched victoriously into Havana. The book is published in trade paperback and eBook formats.

The Cuban Quartet,” is a literary thrill ride,” said Minstrel’s Alley Publisher and President, M.J. Hammond. “It is romantic adventure tale that takes advantage of exotic locations around the world.    At heart, the novel contains a love story that based on speculative incidents that some say occurred when Cuba fell to Fidel Castro and the Communists, in 1959.”

Vibe Interview with Adventure Time Composers Casey Basichis and Tim Kiefer

Here is a terrific interview Vibe conducted with Casey Basichis and Tim Kiefer.  Both are the composers for Adventure Time, the hit TV series on Cartoon Network.

You will rarely find a cartoon that manages to cross the boundaries of age, race, gender and sexuality to become an international success. For that reason, Adventure Time is one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of the century. Created by Pendleton “Pen” Ward, Adventure Time follows Finn the human and Jake the dog as they try to navigate a post-apocalyptic world. It is both belly-cramping hilarious and bleak, morally guided and totally fantastic, megadorable and weighty all at the same time. It’s kind of like the Ren & Stimpy of the millennial generation, except with animation that doesn’t make adults cry and fewer blatant sexual metaphors.

But underlying all the shape-shifting, butt kicking and burrito making is a musical score that’s largely responsible for the vibe of Adventure Time’s whole introspective and nonsensical world. Mixing chiptune with metal, J-pop with beatboxing, the sonic boundaries of Adventure Time are just as warped as the logical boundaries of the show in general. And even though the plot rarely alludes to popular music, the characters often express their emotion via song. From Marceline shredding on a guitar, Lemonhope and his harp, Finn and Jake’s perpetual turning-life-into-a-song, the music of Adventure Time is absolutely essential to the tone of the show as well as making up a substantial portion of the narrative.

Creating the soundtrack to Adventure Time basically sounds like the most fun job ever, so to find out more about it we got in touch with Casey James Basichis and Tim Kiefer, the musical minds who have been musically mapping the Land of Ooo since its inception.

Hi guys! So before we get into Adventure Time, I read that you guys were in a band for a while called Casey James and the Staypuft Kid. Could you tell us a bit about that?
Tim: I’m glad you asked, Emma. Casey and I self-released a few albums and generally crashed the SoCal music scene back in 2007. We were the world’s (but more importantly Myspace’s) foremost Gameboy ukulele duo, spray painting furry fabric CD sleeves, writing music in Casey’s apartment-cum-pirate-ship, and obsessing over fanmail. The album artifacts are alive and well on my site, timspace.com.

And then how do you go from that to getting into Adventure Time?
Casey: We are all creatures of the CalArts dorms. Pen’s early Bueno the Bear webcomics fused earnestness and wit in a way I had never seen – exploiting the obvious at no one’s expense. I chased him down on the Chouinard lawn and gushed. He eventually asked if we would score one of his projects – this was Pen’s 2001 Bueno the Bear short – proto twerking to 90’s dance music – our first collaboration. But Adventure Time came out of the blue and was a blank canvas… a slip and slide into the delicate minds of the global youth.

Minstrel’s Alley to Launch Campaign Marketing Beautiful Bad Girl; The Vicki Morgan Story as a Narrative of Eighties Female Empowerment

Here is a new press release where Minstrel’s Alley is going to run a new marketing campaign for Beautiful Bad Girl.  Thirty years ago most pundits got on their high moral horse about how could a woman take money for sex and indulge in BDSM.   Today, Fifty Shades of Grey is a best seller and hit movie.  My how times have changed.

 

Minstrel’s Alley announced it was planning on marketing its number one bestseller “Beautiful Bad Girl, The Vicki Morgan Story” as a thematic example of early female empowerment. Vicki Morgan was longtime mistress to department store scion and member of Ronald Reagan’s Kitchen Cabinet, Alfred Bloomingdale. The non-fiction novel is told as a first person narrative through the eyes of author, Gordon Basichis, who worked on the book with Morgan, until she was murdered in 1983.

“In any number of publications, including an article in the Sun Herald, Fifty Shades of Grey is considered by many as a story of female empowerment ,” said Minstrel’s Alley Publisher, M.J. Hammond. “While Fifty Shades is a highly readable book, it is fiction, a fantasy. To see the result of a true story of obsessive love and BDSM, then Beautiful Bad Girl is the real thing. And it did not end well for either of the lovers.

“Minstrel’s Alley believes it is time to create a new marketing campaign for Beautiful Bad Girl,” said Hammond. “We see this as a story of a high school dropout who in the world of very rich and powerful people was able to prevail for over a decade, before her devotion to the one love of her life resulted in her murder. But in her prime this was a woman making some mid-six figure income in 1980’s money as a mistress, confidant, and perfunctory lover of some of the more notable names in international society. That is no easy feat.”

Hammond pointed out how Gordon Basichis’ chronicle of Vicki Morgan’s life has displayed remarkable legs as it has sold consistently since its first publication in 1985. She cited how the advent of electronic publishing created a robust market for this highly controversial story. Hammond also remarked that the new Minstrel’s Alley marketing campaign should enable readers to see this story in a different light.
